Veronika Merklein

Veronika Merklein suggests the information presented reveals a narrative the truth of which is embedded in social contexts and power relations. Response to the photographic works and video works is a function of complex, highly political and vulnerable responses forming the controlled matrix of power relations in society. Merklein’s performance reaches deeply into the audience’s humanity.

Veronika Merklein​ (born, Germany, 1982) lives & works mainly in Vienna (AT). As an artist, she works in various media (performance, food, text, photography, object, installation, teamwork) with a focus on performance art. Her work revolves around themes inherent in performance art, pop-cultural phenomena & "the pure, brutal (inner) life of people". Based on her own body, she is currently studying body & food policies as an artistic focus. Veronika received her artistic training at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna & Kassel Art College. She presented work at Defibrillator Gallery, Chicago (US), New Art Association Vienna, Kaskadenkondensator, Basel, Fridericianum, Kassel, Secession, Vienna, Kiasma, Helsinki & regularly in Vienna. Merklein received awards, including Austrian Cultural Forum NYC, Austrian Federal Chancellery, Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Art & Culture, Austrian Federal Ministry of Science & Research, & Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.
